New Approximate Inferential Methods for the Reliability Parameter in a Stress-strength Model: the Normal Case

چکیده
This article considers the problem of testing and interval estimation of the reliability parameter P (Y1 > Y2), where Y1 and Y2 are independent normal random variables with unknown means and variances. A new approximate method is proposed, and is compared with two existing approximate methods and a generalized variable method. Simulation studies indicate that the sizes of the existing approximate tests exceed the nominal level considerably in some situations while the new method controls the sizes satisfactorily in all situations considered. The studies also indicated that the generalized variable test is too conservative for small samples. A confidence limit for the reliability parameter based on the new approximate test is also given. The results are extended to the case where Y1 and Y2 depend on some explanatory variables. The methods are illustrated using three examples, and some recommendations are made regarding what method should be used for practical applications.

Inference on Pr(X > Y ) Based on Record Values From the Power Hazard Rate Distribution
In this article, we consider the problem of estimating the stress-strength reliability $Pr (X > Y)$ based on upper record values when $X$ and $Y$ are two independent but not identically distributed random variables from the power hazard rate distribution with common scale parameter $k$. When the parameter $k$ is known, the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), the approximate Bayes estimator and ...
متن کاملSequential-Based Approach for Estimating the Stress-Strength Reliability Parameter for Exponential Distribution
In this paper, two-stage and purely sequential estimation procedures are considered to construct fixed-width confidence intervals for the reliability parameter under the stress-strength model when the stress and strength are independent exponential random variables with different scale parameters. The exact distribution of the stopping rule under the purely sequential procedure is approximated ...
متن کاملNormal-Based Methods for a Gamma Distribution - Prediction and Tolerance Intervals and Stress-Strength Reliability
In this article we propose inferential procedures for a gamma distribution using the Wilson–Hilferty (WH) normal approximation. Specifically, using the result that the cube root of a gamma random variable is approximately normally distributed, we propose normal-based approaches for a gamma distribution for (a) constructing prediction limits, one-sided tolerance limits, and tolerance intervals; ...
متن کاملReinforced Soil Wall Analysis under Working Stress Conditions Using a Two Phase Model with the Introduction of a New Design Parameter
A previously introduced two phase model was used to assess its capability in predicting the behavior of reinforced soil walls under working stress conditions. The two phase model is a homogenization method based on the virtual work theorem. The reinforced soil medium is considered as the superposition of two continuous phases, the reinforcement and matrix phases that interact within the medium....
متن کاملFailure Process Modeling with Censored Data in Accelerated Life Tests
Manufacturers need to evaluate the reliability of their products in order to increase the customer satisfaction. Proper analysis of reliability also requires an effective study of the failure process of a product, especially its failure time. So, the Failure Process Modeling (FPM) plays a key role in the reliability analysis of the system that has been less focused on. This paper introduces a f...
